No excuses not to win World Cup: Beckham
April 5, 2006 The Straits Times
ENGLAND will not make excuses should they fail to win June's World Cup, said their captain David Beckham.
The Real Madrid star is confident England have a team solid enough to lift the trophy for the first time in 40 years.
Also, most of the players will be fresh after the elimination of Real, Liverpool and Manchester United from the Champions League.
Said Beckham: 'We can't keep making excuses going into competitions because, with the talent we have in our country, we have to go into this competition with the aim of going as far as we can.
'No excuses and no regrets. If we are not good enough, we are not good enough.
'We have gone into tournaments before with players carrying injuries and others missing. Hopefully, we can have everyone fit - that will give us a great chance.'
Injured striker Michael Owen remains England's biggest worry, but Beckham remains optimistic that his vice-captain will be fit in time.
He said: 'It's difficult but I think Michael will be fine. When he recovered from previous injuries, he had come back and scored goals straight away.
'He will be hungry when he returns, he has had a rest over the last few weeks and he will be fresh going into the World Cup.'
Owen moved to Newcastle from Real Madrid last August.
'I feel a bit embarrassed, as I've only played 10 games this season,' said the striker, who needed a second operation to tighten the screw in his broken metatarsal bone.
'It was no fault of my own. Still, something inside me feels a little bit guilty about walking into the treatment room rather than the training pitch.'
