Ask Uncle Sufian (The Self-Proclaimed Parenting Expert)

Dear Uncle Sufian,

My 25 months old son always throws a tantrum at the worst possible place,i.e the grocery, and this is so embarrasing. What should I do?

Despaired Mom

Dear Despaired Mom,

My own 25 months old daughter Aisyah is behaving in the same way as you described.Don't despair, because parenting needs a lot of patience and is a noble and heroic act.Try to remain calm and not to give in to his demands, as this will prolong the 'Terrible Two' stage.Persons without kids do not understand this and will think that it is a PARENTING DEFECT,WHICH IS NOT TRUE.Children love and thrive on attention even the negative ones(such as you screaming and resorting to hitting). The correct procedure is to hug him to calm him down and explain to him why he should not be getting the candy/chocolate bar this time because he is throwing a tantrum. The next time your kids throw a tantrum, just remember that Uncle Sufian thinks that you are a noble and heroic parent that manages to keep calm under adverse situations and survive this difficult period called the Terrible Twos
