My No.1 Fan came up to me after reading my angsty,satirical post on Singapore being a boring country.This is how the conversation goes:
No.1 Fan :Hello uncle,how can you describe Singapore as boring?How could the second richest country in Asia after Japan,with the world's best sea and airport be boring?Arent you proud that we can also boast about having the best zoo and bird park in the world?And Tampines won the accolade from none other than Queen Elizabeth II for the 'World's Best Habitat'?
Me: I am inclined to agree with you about those facts but the point remains that Singapore is boring.Anyways,how often do you visit the zoo,bird park,sea and airport in your lifetime?My main point is that everywhere I go I would see the same old,same old...
No.1 Fan: Of courselah.Singapore needs all these retail activities to remain economically competitive which is essential for our survival
Me:What we need is to retain our old identity that has made us famous.That would entice more tourists.We used to have the infamous Bugis Streeet but the sleaze has since been sanitised.(Not that I overly approve seedy activities) Someone tried to revive Chinatown but look at what it has become today.Even Geylang Serai is going in that direction too...
No.1 Fan:You also said that you would like Singapore to have a nice park with a lake to have a Sunday breakfast.Doesn't Bedok Reservoir sounds like a good idea?Now even watersports are allowed there
Me: Bedok Reservoir?Riiiiiight...
No.1 Fan: You are asking for the world lah uncle.And finally who cares about a kiddy Disneyland now that we are going to build a Disneyland for adults!I mean the IRs if you didnt catch my drift..
Me: If that would result in having to set up more counselling centres.helplines,annonymous groups..I would rather have Disneyland.Too bad Singapore lost the tender to Hong Kong because the Hong Kongers gave an entire Island with MTR service to Disney.Singapore,on the other hand,was only willing to sell the land around Seletar area at 'market rates'.And who knows...Mickey,Donald,Goofy and Pluto might want to stand in the next election and win the Seletar GRC...hehehehhe
